Beach walks and restaurants

Updated October 8, 2026 access from Discover Puerto Rico, surf advice from NWS, parking from La Concha

Condado Beach lines Ashford Avenue in San Juan. It's 5.6 km, or 3.5 miles, by road from Old San Juan's Muelle 1 cruise pier. The beach faces open ocean with strong rip currents. Lifeguards cover only a few stretches, including near the Condado Plaza hotel. You have hotels and restaurants close to the sand. Winter surf raises the risk; swim only near a lifeguard when conditions allow it.

At a glance

Condado Beach at a glance

Water open ocean with strong rip currents, especially in winter. The San Juan Marriott stretch gets particularly rough surf. Playita del Condado's sheltered cove has a family beach reputation; strong undercurrents make that an unreliable guide to swimming safety.
Lifeguards a few stretches have lifeguards, including near Condado Plaza. Don't plan your swim around fixed patrol hours. Your swim depends on a lifeguard being on duty at that stretch and on the day's conditions allowing it.
Shade loungers and umbrellas are available to rent. You don't need to be a hotel guest. Plan your shade with a rental or your own cover instead of relying on a place under trees for the whole visit.
Parking street parking and private hotel parking serve the beach. La Concha at 1077 Ashford Avenue has self-parking for $7 per hour or $20 per day. Hotel guests pay $30 per day for valet; other visitors pay per visit.
On the shore hotels and cafés serve the beach; restaurants line the neighborhood streets. Gift shops sit along the strip too. You can plan a meal away from the sand without turning the beach stop into another trip across San Juan.
The beach from Ventana al Mar park in the west to Punta Piedrita in the east. Ashford Avenue runs behind the shore. Playita del Condado is a separate small cove farther west; your meeting point needs to distinguish it from the main beach.

Before you go

  • A high rip-current risk means staying out of the water. Swimming otherwise depends on conditions and a lifeguard on duty nearby. The small cove at Playita del Condado also has strong undercurrents; its sheltered setting isn't a safety guarantee.

The beach

What Condado Beach is like

Open ocean sets the terms for your visit, with strong currents and heavier surf in winter. The stretch in front of the San Juan Marriott is especially exposed to rough surf. You can't judge safety from sunshine alone. The National Weather Service beach forecast gives the rip-current risk; a high rating means everyone stays out. If someone is struggling, alert a lifeguard or call 911; don't enter the water to attempt a rescue yourself.

Hotels and restaurants line the shore along Ashford Avenue, so you can leave the sand for lunch without arranging another ride. The beach itself is free to visit. You don't need a room reservation to spend time on the sand or walk in through Ventana al Mar park. A rented umbrella gives your beach stop some shade. Plan a walk and a meal even when the ocean rules out your swim.

Condado Lagoon sits behind the beach and has its own kayak outings away from the ocean shore. It's an estuarine nature reserve within San Juan. You can paddle there during the day or choose a night kayak outing with lights on the boats. Kayak outings on the boats list give you another way to spend part of a Condado beach day. You can fit a paddle around lunch on Ashford Avenue and leave the ocean swim out when conditions are poor.
