Top experiences

Top experiences in Puerto Rico: the bio bay, El Yunque and the forts

Every visitor gets sold the same three days: a rainforest morning, a night on glowing water and the forts. Here's what each one costs you, and what decides whether it's worth your day.

Mosquito Bay, Vieques: an electric boat on the bioluminescent bay at night

A night on a bioluminescent bay

Fajardo, Vieques and La Parguera · Top 14 bio bay tours

Three bays glow. Mosquito Bay on Vieques is the brightest on record. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is where most tours from San Juan take you. La Parguera in Lajas is the only one where you can swim. Kayaks and electric boats only. What you pay runs from $60 for a kayak seat to $184 for the forest by day and the bay by night with pickup.

The catch: the glow runs on the moon. Tours skip the full-moon nights, and the water is brightest around the new moon. Pick your night by the moon before you pick the tour.

Río Grande, east of San Juan · Top 70 El Yunque tours

No reservation and no gate fee. The forest road PR-191 opens 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The El Portal visitor center is $8, under 16 free. Many tours sell you a river waterslide or a lunch stop in Luquillo on top.

The catch: on a waterslide tour the forest itself can be one stop of five. Read the itinerary before you pay for the name.

The catch: the pass runs 24 hours, not a calendar day. Buy it after lunch and it still works the next morning.

Today: no ships in port. The ramparts are yours.

Good to know

People also ask

  • Do I need a passport for Puerto Rico?

No, if you are a U.S. citizen. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so a flight from the mainland is a domestic flight and the money is the U.S. dollar. Visitors from other countries need the same documents as for the mainland United States.

  • Which bioluminescent bay is the brightest?

Mosquito Bay on Vieques, by the record. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the easiest from San Juan. La Parguera is the only one where you can swim. All three are darkest around the new moon. This week that's Saturday, so you have the best nights ahead of you.

  • When is hurricane season in Puerto Rico?

June 1 to November 30, with the most active weeks from mid-August to October. Tours run through the season on calm days. Means: book the bay and the boat for your first nights, so a storm day costs you a beach day and not the glow.

  • How do I get to Culebra or Vieques?

By ferry from Ceiba: $2 to Vieques and $2.25 to Culebra each way, tickets online or at the port window. By small plane from San Juan or Ceiba. Or on a boat day trip from Fajardo to Culebra, from $162, with no ferry to catch.
