Places to visit in Puerto Rico

Updated October 8, 2026 fees and hours from the park service, the forest service and the ferry operator

Two forts frame the walled city of Old San Juan, and El Yunque takes you into the rainforest. The moon shapes a night at the three glowing bays. Culebra and Vieques need a ferry plan, and the caves mean a drive to the northwest, so the time on the road decides the day. Seven places with the entry, the hours and how you get there. The beaches have their own page.

Which place for you

Best for one day, for a family, or without a car

Best for one day Old San Juan and the forts

The Old San Juan piers put San Cristóbal within a 10 to 15 minute walk, and El Morro is another 15 to 20 minutes along the wall. The whole walled city is on foot. Drivers park at Doña Fela or Covadonga by the piers.

Best for a family El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque's forest is free to enter. El Portal, the visitor center, costs $8. The main corridor opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so a forest day has clear limits. With a car you set your own pace; without one, a tour does the driving.

Best without a car Old San Juan and the forts

The walled city costs nothing to walk, and the forts are $10 per person for both, with children under 16 free. Everything sits within a 15 to 20 minute walk. Without a car, stay inside the walls; El Yunque needs a tour or a cab.

Places in Puerto Rico worth a day

Old San Juan puts the forts within walking reach, while the island beaches need a ferry plan from Ceiba. Choose your main stop before adding another place; a low entry fee doesn't shorten the journey or delay a return sailing.

El Morro and San CristóbalEl Morro and San Cristóbal Old San Juan

Two Spanish forts over the sea and the walled city, one pass for both. El Morro guards the bay and San Cristóbal the land side, a 15 to 20 minute walk apart.

El Yunque National ForestEl Yunque National Forest Río Grande, east

The rainforest is east of San Juan. You don't need a reservation for the main recreation corridor, but access still takes a car or a tour.

The bioluminescent baysThe bioluminescent bays Fajardo, Vieques, Lajas

Laguna Grande and La Parguera offer glowing water after dark on the mainland. A Mosquito Bay tour means crossing to Vieques, so your evening plans start with choosing between the mainland and an island stay.

Culebra and Flamenco BeachCulebra and Flamenco Beach ferry from Ceiba

Flamenco is the beach stop on Culebra. Book your return ferry along with the outbound sailing, with time for the van back from the beach before boarding.

ViequesVieques ferry from Ceiba

Vieques pairs a beach day with a bay night. An overnight stay gives you room for Mosquito Bay, so the evening tour doesn't depend on finding a ferry home after dark.

Old San JuanOld San Juan the walled city

The walled city starts beside the cruise piers. You can walk its streets for free and stop when you want, though a fort visit still needs to fit its opening hours.

Cueva Ventana and the Camuy cavesCueva Ventana and the Camuy caves Arecibo and Camuy, northwest

Cueva Ventana and Camuy offer guided cave walks. Your Cueva Ventana admission costs $29 per person, and children under 3 can't join the guided walk.

Good to know

People also ask

  • What are the best places to visit in Puerto Rico?

Old San Juan and its forts are the best start. You can walk between them. El Yunque adds a rainforest day without a forest entry fee.

Culebra suits a beach trip; Vieques suits a beach stay with Mosquito Bay after dark. The cave parks make a separate northwest outing. Your bio bay choice depends on transport and the moon.

  • How many days do you need in Puerto Rico?

Three days give you a workable first route. Day one stays in Old San Juan. Day two pairs El Yunque with Laguna Grande after dark.

The third day can be Culebra if the ferries fit. If you've only got one day, the city keeps travel simple. Mosquito Bay needs a different plan: leave room to sleep on Vieques.

  • Can you see El Yunque and the bio bay in one day?

Yes, if you pair El Yunque with Laguna Grande in Fajardo. They suit an east coast day by car. The forest corridor closes at 5 p.m.

The bay tour starts after dark. Leave time for the drive and the tour's meeting time. Your chosen tour may skip full moon nights, so the moon can break this plan.

  • Is Culebra or Vieques better for a day trip?

Culebra suits a beach day; Vieques suits an overnight for Mosquito Bay. Ceiba ferries cost $2.25 to Culebra and $2 to Vieques, each way for ages 13 to 59. Your return sailing still decides the day.

Arrive 1 hour early; boarding closes 10 minutes before departure. Book both ferry legs before setting a beach day; stay on Vieques for the bay after dark.

  • What can you do in Puerto Rico without a car?

Old San Juan and the forts work on foot. You don't need a car from the Old San Juan cruise piers. The San Cristóbal walk takes 10 to 15 minutes.

El Yunque needs arranged transport if you aren't driving. Rideshare pickup isn't available inside the forest. The ferry gets you to an island; it doesn't get you from San Juan to Ceiba.
